Our Car-Free Summer Vacation
Every summer we go to our beach home on Bald Head Island. A secluded barrier island tucked away on the tip of the Cape Fear River at the Southern most point of North Carolina, BHI is a magical enclave that can only be accessed by ferry.
The only modes of transportation on the island are strictly golf carts or bicycles, the added charm of Bald Head are the miles of unspoiled beaches and thousands of acres of lush maritime forest and salt marshes protected as a nature preserve waiting to be explored. The BHI Conservancy does a great job preserving wildlife on Bald Head, including the 3 types of sea turtles who come to the island each year to lay eggs and hatch their young.
What can’t be missed is the island’s annual Independence Day celebration, where we get our dose of Americana. The day includes picnics, scavenger hunts and the much anticipated golf cart parade.
Whimsically decorated golf carts and elaborate floats parade through the village and compete for the parade’s coveted slot of the island’s “Best in Show”. We promised our girls that next year we’ll come up with a fun idea and deck out our cart with hopes to win a category in the parade.
We love our summers on this rustic little island. Stay tuned for lots more summer fun and recipe ideas from BHI …. coming soon. Meanwhile, the island also has a free iPhone app which features sunsets on the live web cam, plus a calendar of programs, contact numbers, activities and recreational events.
